With some of the best schools in the state, Obion County offers its residents educational opportunities from birth to college and beyond. The schools in Obion County are equipped with highly qualified teachers and new or upgraded facilities. Outside the classroom, Obion County offers the ability to develop physical, mental, and social skills through organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of Northwest Tennessee, Chamber of Youth in Community Service, Business Professionals of America, and Junior Civitan Club; through cultural activities such as participating in theatre productions or playing in the high school band; and through sports such as soccer, baseball, football, golf, track, etc. Education continues beyond high school due to facilities such as the University of Tennessee at Martin, Dyersburg State Community College, and Murray State University, all within an hour from Union City. Adults are also given the opportunity to increase their skills by taking courses at the Tennessee Technology Center or the Obion County Industrial Training and Education Center. Residents of Obion County are fortunate to have local benefactors and businesses that ensure that students do not miss an educational opportunity because of finances. The new public library was fully funded by private donations and is designed to serve the entire community with its children's wing, computer access, community meeting rooms, and genealogy department.

Higher Education

University of Tennessee at Martin

A four year university offering Bachelor and Master degrees in more than 70 specialized fields through the Schools of Agriculture and Home Economics, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Engineering Technology and Engineering, and the Division of Fine and Performing Arts. UTM and its programs are accredited by several agencies and is the largest institution in the UT system outside a major urban area.

Dyersburg State Community College

A comprehensive, two-year post-secondary institution offering programs in liberal arts, technical, professional, developmental, and enrichment programs, DSCC is a higher education institution of the State University and Community College System of Tennessee and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree.

An industrial training center which utilizes a state-of-the-art facility to meet the demands of the area through quality education and training, the center's primary goal is to retain and promote economic development opportunities in Northwest Tennessee as well as to support local industries, provide support to employers in Northwest Tennessee, assist in recruiting new industries, and train new maintenance personnel in the latest technology. The specific purpose of the State Area Vocational-Technical School at Newbern is to provide training in occupations designated by local businesses and industries as those needing a supply of skilled or trained employees. The school provides occupational training in the areas of automotive mechanics, electronics, drafting, machine shop, welding, air conditioning & refrigeration, industrial maintenance, business systems technology practical nursing and others.
